How to differentiate between crystal and glass when it comes to wine glasses?

A true wine connoisseur will know that the wine glass can impact the way you enjoy your wines. It is not just about the shape or style of the glass. Most often, the material also matters. Crystal wine glasses are one of the most exquisite pieces of stemware. But if you are not well-versed, then the differences between crystal and glass wine glasses can catch you in a loop. So how can you distinguish the two?

4 parameters for differentiating between crystal and glass wine glasses:

Sure normal wine glasses are inexpensive, dishwasher safe and durable. Crystal wine glasses have none of these qualities, yet they will be one of your best investments. Look for these four parameters when buying crystal wine glasses:

  • Sound: Heard that satisfying clink while giving a toast or clanking a fellow drinker’s glass? If the noise is prolonged and high-pitched, then you are holding a crystal glass. A normal glass would make a dull and short-lived noise. Additionally, you can circle the rim of the glass with a wet finger to do the sound test. Crystal glasses can produce a hum with very little pressure.
  • Light: It is an easier test to check a glass. When holding the glass against the light, if you can see a rainbow, then it is crystal glass. These glasses refract light and create a prism effect. Normal glasses do not have the iridescent effect. Additionally, if you shine a pocket UV light on a crystal glass, you can see purple and blue hues and green hues on a soda lime glass.
  • Weight: Crystal glasses contain lead which is a heavy metal. Therefore, a crystal glass will weigh more than a soda lime glass of the same shape, size and design. Hold both glasses in each hand, and the difference will be noticeable.
  • Thickness: If your wine glass is thick, then it is made of normal glass. Crystal glasses are thinner in density. Soda lime glasses also have a thicker rim called the lip, which is absent in crystal glasses.
